Forty graphite drawings made over a single winter, each tracing a single object held in late afternoon light. The series is the first project I completed without naming any of its parts.
Forty Drawings
I worked on one sheet a day from December through February. The rule was to begin only when the light reached the desk, and to stop the moment it left.
Some sheets carry a drawing of the same cup four or five times; others carry a single, almost reluctant line.
Late Afternoon
A subset of the drawings — eleven sheets — were made between four and five in the afternoon, when shadow lengthens across the desk. These are presented as a separate group, hung in a single low row.
